The Experience

You push off from South Coast Horizons on the southern coast, kayak sliding into the mangrove lagoon with the guide leading the way. The water is calm here, bracketed by Mount Obama to the north and the Caribbean stretching south, and the mangroves close in around you—dense, quiet, full of movement if you look. Tropical fish dart between the roots, crabs scatter, seabirds work the shallows. The guide points things out as you paddle, talking about what lives here and how the whole system works, and then the mangroves open onto a secluded beach where you can breathe for a moment before the next part.

A short boat ride takes you out to Cades Reef, about a quarter mile offshore in the Cades Bay Marine Reserve. This is where Antigua's snorkeling actually happens—the reef is protected, which means the fish are there, the coral is intact, and you're not fighting crowds. You get snorkel gear (included), and then you're in the water looking at what a living reef looks like. The reserve also protects seagrass beds and mangrove wetlands, and if you're lucky you might see evidence of the turtle nesting sites, though the turtles themselves are harder to spot.
