The experience
The tour starts from your hotel, villa, Airbnb or cruise pier and moves through the island in a fully air-conditioned vehicle with a guide who knows Antigua's history and culture. You'll stop at Betty's Hope, the sugar plantation founded around 1650 that shaped the island's economy for centuries. The ruins remain, along with a trail system through the grounds and interpretive signage that walks you through what life looked like then. From there the route takes you through rainforest roads thick with mango, pineapple and banana trees before reaching Devil's Bridge on the Atlantic coast: a natural rock arch where Trade Winds push waves into blowholes that spray up from the ocean.
Nelson's Dockyard comes next, the eighteenth-century British naval harbor built to protect ships from hurricanes and monitor French activity. The site now holds multiple exhibits and areas to explore. The final stop is Shirley Heights, named after a former governor and positioned high enough to give you a bird's-eye view of English Harbour and Galleon Beach below. The whole route takes four to five hours including travel time between stops. Bottled water and drinks come with the tour, and if you're traveling with infants or children four years old or younger, a complimentary car or booster seat is provided.

What exactly is Betty's Hope and why is it on the tour?

Devil's Bridge is a natural rock arch on Antigua's Atlantic coast, declared a national park in 2008.
