The Experience

Someone’s already pouring rum punch before I’ve even kicked off my sandals. The sand at Ffryes Beach is softer than I’d pictured—almost squeaky underfoot, if that makes sense. We found our little patch of shade under the pavilion, loungers set up just for us. There was this reggae tune drifting over from the bar (which, by the way, is only for our group—felt strangely fancy). I’m not really a “beach day” person but something about the calm here gets to you fast.

Mamma Nancy was there too—she started reciting poetry while we were still drying off from a swim. Her voice kind of rolled along with the breeze; even if you’re not into poetry, you end up listening. Lunch was simple but perfect: BBQ chicken, rice and beans (or pasta if you want), fresh pineapple that tasted like sunshine. I tried to ask for seconds in my best attempt at Antiguan dialect—got a laugh from one of the cooks, which felt like an unofficial welcome.

I went for a swim after lunch—the water’s so clear you can see your toes even when you’re out deep. Some folks went kayaking or snorkeling near Cades Reef (that’s extra, but they said it was worth it). Mostly though, I just lay back and watched clouds drift over Montserrat in the distance. Didn’t expect to feel so relaxed. Still think about that view sometimes—makes regular beaches seem noisy now.
