The Experience

The van pulled up right outside our hotel in Tirana—earlier than I expected, but honestly, it felt good not to worry about finding a meeting point. The road north was quiet at first, just the hum of tires and that early-morning grey light you get before the sun really decides what kind of day it’ll be. We stopped for coffee somewhere near the border—thick and sweet, with that burnt aroma clinging to my fingers after. Crossing into Kosovo felt almost casual; just a quick check, then suddenly the signs changed language and everything looked a little different.

Prizren is one of those places where you can’t help but look up. Minarets and old stone bridges everywhere, and people actually use them—not just tourists posing for photos (though we did that too). Arben led us through Shadervan Square where kids were chasing pigeons around the fountain. He pointed out the Sinan Pasha Mosque—said it’s still active—and then we climbed up to the fortress above town. The view over red rooftops and the Bistrica River was… well, let’s just say I took more photos than I’ll ever show anyone. Lunch was in an old bazaar café; smoky grilled peppers and bread that left flour on my hands. There was this moment inside Our Lady of Ljeviš Church—just dust motes in slanting light, no one talking—that stuck with me longer than I thought it would.

After Prizren, Prishtina felt louder somehow—more cars, more color.
