The Experience

You leave Tirana or Durrës early and spend the first half of the day in a vehicle climbing toward the Alps. The route passes through green countryside to Shkodra, a historic city on Lake Shkodra where you can stretch, then narrows and steepens into the mountains. The Qafa e Thores Pass opens up panoramic views of rugged peaks and deep valleys dotted with remote stone villages. A 4x4 handles the unpaved and steep sections of road. By midday you arrive in Theth, a tranquil mountain village where the real day begins.

Two hikes structure the afternoon. The first follows the Thethi River from the village center on a well-marked path through forests and meadows—about 45 minutes each way, gaining 200 meters in elevation. Grunas Waterfall appears as a 30-meter cascade into a crystal-clear pool, surrounded by limestone cliffs and dense greenery. The mist from the falls cools the air on warm days; the water itself stays too cold for swimming. The second hike starts in nearby Nderlysaj village and climbs steadily through shaded woodland for 30–45 minutes to reach the Blue Eye, a deep vibrant spring fed by underground water. The basin sits in rock, and the water runs near freezing year-round. Both trails are moderate and accessible to most hikers with comfortable shoes and good grip.

After the hikes, you eat a traditional Albanian lunch at a local guesthouse—home-cooked mountain dishes and the hospitality of the region included. The guide stays with you throughout the day, speaking English and handling the route, timing and logistics. The drive back to Tirana or Durrës takes the same 5–6 hours, arriving in the evening. The entire day runs about eight hours from pickup to drop-off.

Top questions

How long is the drive from Tirana to Theth?

The drive takes 5–6 hours each way. You pass through Shkodra and climb into the Albanian Alps on partly unpaved mountain roads, with the Qafa e Thores Pass offering panoramic views of peaks and valleys along the way.

What are Grunas Waterfall and the Blue Eye?

Grunas Waterfall is a 30-meter cascade that plunges into a crystal-clear pool surrounded by limestone cliffs and forest. The Blue Eye is a deep, vibrant blue spring fed by underground water, set in a rocky basin in the mountains. Both are reached by scenic hikes from Theth village.

How difficult are the hikes?

Both hikes are easy to moderate. The trail to Grunas Waterfall is about 2.5 kilometers one-way and takes 45 minutes each way, gaining around 200 meters. The Blue Eye hike is roughly 5.8 kilometers round-trip and takes 1.5 to 2 hours total, with a steady uphill section through shaded woodland.

What is included in the tour?

The tour includes pickup from Tirana or Durrës, a professional local guide who speaks English, all entry fees and taxes, and a traditional Albanian lunch at a mountain guesthouse. You do not arrange transport or meals separately.

When is the best time to visit Theth?

Late spring through early autumn offers the best road conditions and weather. Outside this window, the unpaved mountain roads become difficult to navigate, and alpine weather can be unpredictable.

Can I swim in the waterfall or the Blue Eye?

Swimming is not recommended at Grunas Waterfall because the water is very cold. The Blue Eye is also near freezing year-round, though some visitors do take a dip. Both sites are better for photography and enjoying the landscape.
