The experience
Pickup from your Tirana hotel at 8:00 AM starts a 2-hour drive to Prizren, Kosovo's cultural capital. The walking tour moves through the Sinan Pasha Mosque, the UNESCO-listed Church of Our Lady of Ljevis, and the Museum of Prizren League before reaching the Ottoman Old Town, where gold and silver filigree craftsmen still work in the narrow streets. From there the route continues to Pristina, stopping first at Monastery Gracanica on the way.
Pristina's stops span centuries: the Kosova National Library shows modern architecture. The open-air archaeological park and Kosova Museum hold Neolithic artifacts including the Goddess on a Throne terracotta from the museum's Austrian-built structure. The Çarshi Mosque, built in the 15th century by Sultan Bajazit, stands as Pristina's oldest building, followed by the Academy Building (19th-century Ottoman konak style), the Fatih Mosque from 1461, and the Great Hammam with its 15 domes built in 1470. Lunch happens in Pristina before the drive to Skopje, where you have a free evening and overnight in a 3- to 4-star hotel.
Day two begins with a walking tour of Skopje's city center, starting at Skopje Fortress for views over the capital. The route passes the Church of the Holy Savior with its iconostasis, Sultan Murat Mosque, and the Old Bazaar: remnants of the Ottoman period and Skopje's role as a Balkan trade hub. After crossing the Vadar River, you see the neo-classical square, Mother Teresa's memorial house, and the Porta Macedonia triumphal arch before driving to Lake Ohrid. There, a second walking tour covers the 11th-century Church of St. Sophia, a 3rd-century Roman amphitheater, the Icon Gallery, the 13th-century Church of St. Clement's, Tsar Samoil's Fortress, and the newly built St. Clement's Monastery Church at Plaoshnik, which sits beside the original site of the 9th-century St. Clement's University. The final stop is the Church of St. Jovan at Kaneo, built at the end of the 13th century on the lake's edge, before return to Tirana.
