The experience

The day starts at 8:30 am heading southeast toward Belsh and the Dumre plateau, a region of more than 86 small karstic lakes known locally as the Tuscany of Albania. You'll walk the Belshi lake promenade before the route turns south to Berat, a town that has stood for 2,000 years and was registered by UNESCO in 2008 as a cultural heritage site.

In Berat, the fortress sits on a 187-meter hill on the left slope of the Osumi River: one of the few inhabited fortresses left in Albania. Your guide takes you inside to the Church of Saint Mary, where the Onufri Museum holds Byzantine religious art, and to several other Byzantine churches within the fortress walls. The fortress itself was originally a proto-urban settlement in the 7th–5th century BC before it became a strategic stronghold stretching 1,400 meters with a surface area of 10 hectares.

Coming down from the fortress into the old quarter, you walk past the characteristic stone houses stacked on the hillside, then visit the King Mosque, Bachelor's Mosque, and Halvetie Teqe. Berat is also known for its traditional cuisine, and stops for lunch are built into the day.
