In Berat, the fortress sits on a 187-meter hill on the left slope of the Osumi River—one of the few inhabited fortresses left in Albania. Your guide takes you inside to the Church of Saint Mary, where the Onufri Museum holds Byzantine religious art, and to several other Byzantine churches within the fortress walls. The fortress itself was originally a proto-urban settlement in the 7th–5th century BC before it became a strategic stronghold stretching 1,400 meters with a surface area of 10 hectares.
