The tour leaves Tirana at 8:00 am and heads south for roughly two hours to reach Apollonia, an ancient city founded by Greek colonists in the 6th century BC. Once a major stop on the Via Egnatia trade route and a center of learning where Roman emperors studied, Apollonia is now an archaeological park surrounded by olive groves. You walk through the site with your guide, seeing temples, an odeon and other remains that show how developed this classical city was before it faded from history.

After Apollonia, the route continues to Berat, a city with over 2,000 years of layered history: Illyrian, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman. The Ethnographic Museum, housed in a restored Ottoman-era family home since 1979, shows how locals lived day to day in that period. The castle district, or Kalaja, sits at the top of the hill and holds the oldest neighborhoods, with churches dating back to the 14th century. Below, Mangalem clings to the steep slope with its signature white walls and many windows facing across the river toward Gorica, a merchant quarter built in the 17th and 18th centuries. The two neighborhoods mirror each other across the Osumi River, connected by the Stone Bridge of Gorica.
