The experience

You're picked up from your Tirana hotel and driven 300 kilometers to Skopje, North Macedonia's capital. The route itself tells a story: you'll pass through regions still marked by communist-era industrial complexes and bunkers, then enter a city rebuilt after the 1963 earthquake that destroyed eighty percent of it. Once in Skopje, the guide takes you to the Vardar River bridges (the Eye Bridge and Art Bridge among them), where statues of Macedonia's most important historical figures line the walkways. This is the modern face of the city, largely reconstructed in the Yugoslavian and contemporary style that now defines the center.

The second half crosses into the Old Bazaar, where Skopje's Ottoman heritage comes alive. The bazaar dates to the late twelfth century and became one of the Balkans' largest marketplaces during the Ottoman period. You'll walk past the Bezisten, a covered market where gold, silver, and jewelry were once traded, and the Kurshumli Han, a seventeenth-century caravanserai with capacity for around a hundred horses. It served travelers, merchants, and later as a military stable. The only old bridge remaining in the city center connects both sides of the Vardar here. You'll also visit the Mustafa Pasha Mosque, built in 1492 and one of the few structures that survived the 1963 earthquake, now a symbol of the city's multi-religious character.

The fortress sits on a dominant hill above the city, its restored outer walls marking it as a key position throughout Skopje's history and offering some of the best vantage points for photographs. Inside the Old Bazaar stands the Church of St. Clement, built in the mid-sixteenth century on the foundation of an older church, famous for its hand-carved wooden iconostasis and Byzantine frescoes. You'll also visit the Memorial House of Mother Teresa, born in Skopje to a local Albanian family and now a museum dedicated to her life. The tour ends with evening drop-off at your hotel or anywhere in the city.
