The Experience

The first thing I noticed as we crossed the border from Albania was how the landscape shifted — fields giving way to low hills, and then suddenly Prizren appeared, its rooftops scattered along both sides of the river. Our guide, Arben, kept pointing out little things I’d have missed: old Communist-era factories rusting in the distance, kids selling sunflower seeds at the roadside. It was early but already warm; you could smell bread baking somewhere nearby when we stepped out in the center.

Climbing up to the Prizren Fortress took more effort than I expected (maybe I need to walk more), but that view — minarets and church towers poking up between red roofs, the river winding through it all — made me stop talking for a second. Arben told us about how this place has seen everything: ancient settlements, Ottoman armies, even recent wars. He joked that every stone probably has three stories behind it. The wind up there felt cool against my face after the climb.

Back down in town, we wandered into Sinan Pasha Mosque. The carpets were soft underfoot and there was this faint scent of incense mixed with old stone — hard to describe but kind of grounding. I tried saying “thank you” in Albanian to one of the caretakers; she smiled politely but I’m sure my accent was way off. We also stopped at the League of Prizren museum — lots of old photos and traditional clothes. It’s strange seeing history laid out like that when outside people are just going about their day.

I didn’t expect to feel so much just walking around here — maybe it’s something about how everyone seems to coexist without fuss. Even with some places closed for renovation (the 14th-century church is covered in scaffolding right now), there’s this sense that life keeps moving forward anyway. On the drive back to Tirana, I kept replaying that view from the fortress in my head — honestly, it sticks with you.
