You’ll get to explore ancient ruins at Buthrotum, dip your toes in Ksamil’s clear waters, and catch amazing views from Lekuresi Castle—all with easy transport and local stories along the way.
The morning air was still cool when we hopped into the van outside our hotel in Saranda. Our driver greeted us with a grin and a quick “Mirëmëngjes!” as we set off along the winding road. Not far out of town, the smell of saltwater drifted in through the open window—turns out, that’s the mussel lake you’ll spot on the right, the only one like it in Albania. There were a few fishermen already out, their small boats barely making a ripple.
We reached Ksamil just as the sun started to warm up the sand. The beaches here are something else—tiny coves with soft white sand and water so clear you can see little fish darting around your toes. Our guide pointed out a local café where folks grab strong coffee before heading to the beach. We didn’t linger too long; there was more to see.
Buthrotum was next, tucked away behind some olive trees and reeds. Walking through the old stone gates felt like stepping back in time. Our guide shared stories about the ancient Greeks and Romans who once lived here—he even showed us a spot where you can still see faded mosaics if you look closely enough. It’s quiet except for birds and the crunch of gravel underfoot. We spent about an hour and a half wandering among amphitheaters, old walls, and shady paths.
Before heading back, we made a quick stop at Lekuresi Castle. The view from up there is wild—you get this sweeping look over Saranda and the sea beyond. There’s usually a breeze at the top, which felt great after walking around all day. Then it was back to our starting point, tired but happy we’d seen so much in just one trip.
