The experience

The tour starts at your hotel and heads straight to the coast, stopping at My Khe Beach where fishing still happens the old way. From there the jeep climbs Son Tra Mountain, locals call it Monkey Mountain, on a road that twists through several peaks. The real draw is the red-shanked douc monkeys and other endangered species that live in the forest. The guide knows where to look and when they're most active. The views open up across Da Nang and the surrounding countryside as you gain elevation.

At the top of Son Tra sits the Lady Buddha, the largest Buddha statue in Vietnam, and the Linh Ung Pagoda, the largest pagoda in Da Nang. After lunch (included), the route heads north along Da Nang bay to Hai Van Pass, where concrete bunkers from the war still stand and you can walk through them. The descent winds down to Lang Co, then loops around the back of Lap An lagoon. Weather permitting, your group can swim in the mountains. On the way back, smaller country roads cut through Vietnamese craft villages and rice paddies, with stops to talk to locals before you return to your hotel in time for dinner.

The open-top jeep is the whole point. It lets you move fast enough to cover the terrain and stop often enough to actually see things, without the glass barrier of a closed vehicle. A guide who speaks English or Vietnamese rides with you and handles the driving and the navigation. Soft drinks come along for the ride.

Is this one for you?Hotel pickup means you don't need a car or navigate the winding mountain roads yourself. The open-top jeep covers ground fast enough to hit four separate areas (the coast, Son Tra's peaks, Hai Van Pass and the lagoon) in a single day, which a self-drive trip would stretch across two.
