The Experience

We’d barely zipped out of Nha Trang when our guide, Minh, pulled over at a roadside stall and handed me a tiny cup of strong coffee—thick as syrup, with that burnt-sweet smell that hangs in the morning air here. He grinned and asked if I’d ever tried making rice paper. Before I could answer, we were ducking into a family courtyard where an older woman was flipping delicate sheets over a bamboo rack. She let me have a go (I definitely tore it), but she just laughed and patted my shoulder. The whole place smelled like toasted rice and something floral—jasmine maybe?

The motorbike part was honestly more fun than I expected. There’s this rush when you’re flying past green fields and water buffalo just sort of stare at you like you’re the odd one out. Minh pointed out the conical hats drying by the road—he said his aunt still weaves them by hand—and then we stopped at Tong Lam pagoda. It was quiet except for the soft chanting inside; incense smoke curled up into the sunlight through open doors. I tried to say “thank you” in Vietnamese to one of the monks, but Minh had to help me out (my pronunciation is hopeless). Still felt good to try.

We ended up at I-Resort Hot Mineral Springs around midday—the sun was already heavy on my shoulders. The pools were steamy but not too hot; after riding all morning, sinking into that mineral water felt like letting go of every muscle in my back. Lunch was simple but perfect—rice, fresh veggies, something sweet with coconut—and we sat under these wide umbrellas just listening to kids laughing somewhere nearby. At some point Minh told us about the Amitabha Buddha statue being Vietnam’s tallest; he seemed proud of that.

I keep thinking about those small moments—the way people wave as you pass through their village or how the air changes from salty sea to warm earth as you get further inland. If you want a day trip from Nha Trang that feels real (and lets you see more than just beaches), this motorbike tour is probably it.
