The Experience

We kicked off right in the middle of Nha Trang’s morning traffic — helmets on, engines rumbling. Our guide, Tuan, gave me a quick nod before we zigzagged out of the city and suddenly it was all green fields and those skinny white cows you see everywhere. The air changed too — less salty, more like wet grass and something sweet I couldn’t place. We stopped at Long Son Pagoda first. Tuan pointed up at the giant Buddha (I think he said 24 meters high?) and told us about monks who still ring the bell every afternoon. There was incense smoke curling around my nose and a little old lady selling lotus tea. I tried some — not sure if I liked it but it felt right to try.

After that we hit the road again, winding past rice paddies with kids waving at us (one yelled “hello!” so loud I nearly swerved). The motorbike part is honestly half the fun; you feel every bump and breeze. At Ponagar Temple, Tuan talked about Champa history while I tried to remember any school lessons about Hindu towers — nothing came to mind but I liked how he described the carvings anyway. Then we started climbing into Hon Ba Nature Reserve. The road got steeper and misty, with trees closing in tight on both sides. There was this moment where everything went quiet except for our engines and some birds — kind of peaceful in a way that sticks with you.

Lunch was at the waterfall. Tuan unpacked skewers and beer from his bag like some magician uncle (he even had veggie stuff for my friend). The water was cold enough to make me gasp when I jumped in — but after five minutes I didn’t want to get out. We ate BBQ right there on smooth rocks, dipping our toes in the stream. It tasted smoky and simple, maybe because we were starving by then or maybe just because it was real food cooked outside. On the way back down, sunburned and tired, I caught myself grinning for no reason at all.
