The experience

The tour starts with a 15-minute drive along Da Nang's coast to Marble Mountains, a cluster of five marble and limestone peaks that rise from the sea. Inside are natural caves and tunnels that served as hiding places and hospitals for Vietnamese soldiers during the war, right next to where American bases once stood. Your guide will walk you through these spaces and show you centuries-old Buddhist statues, pagodas and temples carved into the rock. There are several viewpoints across the caves where you can see the river, ocean and islands. After the caves, you'll stop at a 500-year-old carving village at the mountain's base to see marble sculptures.

From there, a 15-minute drive takes you to Hoi An Ancient Town, a UNESCO heritage site recognized in 1999. The old town is a maze of small alleyways lined with colorful lanterns outside cafes and shops. Houses and temples blend Vietnamese, Japanese, Chinese and French architectural styles, a legacy of its role as a trading port from the 15th to 19th centuries. Your guide will lead you along the river bank to see traditional boats and colonial-style houses, explaining the history and culture as you walk.

After Hoi An, you'll drive a short distance to Tra Que vegetable village for lunch. This 300-year-old farming community grows local herbs and vegetables year-round. You'll have time to walk through the gardens, talk with villagers, and take photographs before sitting down to eat in a restaurant set in the middle of the fields. Lunch includes five Vietnamese dishes made with the freshest ingredients from the village. The drive back to Tien Sa Port takes 30 minutes.
