The Experience

The shuttle picks you up around 7am from the Hanoi Opera House or your hotel in the old quarter, and you're heading toward Cat Ba Island before most of the city wakes up. The drive takes a few hours — there's time to doze or watch the landscape shift from urban streets to limestone cliffs rising out of the water. By 11am you're at Beo Harbour on Cat Ba, boarding the cruise itself: a proper boat with a rooftop bar, two restaurants, a floating pool, and yes, an actual water slide. It's the kind of setup that makes you realize this isn't a packed tourist ferry.

Once you're on the water heading into Lan Ha Bay, the itinerary moves fast but doesn't feel rushed. You stop at Cai Beo, a 7,000-year-old fishing village where houses still float along the mountainside — it's quiet in a way that feels almost accidental, like the place hasn't quite noticed tourism yet. Then comes lunch (buffet style if your group is 40 or more), and after that you either bike or take an electric car through Viet Hai Village in Cat Ba National Park, walking past traditional houses and talking to locals if you want to. Some people do the fish-foot massage there; others just wander. The guide reads the group and adjusts.

The water activities are where the day opens up. Depending on conditions and what the captain thinks will work, you might kayak into limestone caves, jump off the boat into the bay, slide down from the top deck, or just swim in the middle of the sea. A life jacket is recommended for all of it, and the crew takes that seriously. There's a small sunset gathering on deck with fresh fruit and tea before the boat turns back toward Cat Ba around 4:45pm. If you booked the shuttle bus back to Hanoi, you're heading home then; if not, you stay on the island or arrange your own transport. The shuttle gets you back to the Opera House or your hotel around 8:30pm.
