Minh Mang, who had 142 children and 78 sons, built a tomb so laden with provisions (prepared while he was still alive) that nothing inside was ever meant to be used in life, only in death. Khai Dinh's tomb, built by the 12th emperor of the dynasty, is the smallest but also the most expensive and ornate in the entire system. It's now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Tu Duc, who designed his own mausoleum between 1864 and 1867, created what many consider the most impressive of all the royal mausoleums: a project so costly and demanding that it sparked a coup plot among those forced to build it.
