The day starts at 7am with pickup from your Hoi An hotel. The drive to Hue crosses Hai Van Pass, where you stop for views and photos before reaching the city around 10am. Tu Duc's Tomb comes first: a royal burial site built over decades in the 19th century. After an hour to eat, you spend two hours inside the Imperial Citadel, the walled palace complex where Nguyen kings ruled. You walk past the Flag Tower, the Noon Gate, the Nine Dynastic Urns, the Nine Holy Cannons, Thai Hoa Palace and the Forbidden Purple City, the royal residence at its center. The citadel mixes Vietnamese, Chinese and French architecture across grounds that took 27 years to complete.
From the citadel you drive to the Perfume River and visit Thien Mu Pagoda, a seven-story temple that has stood as Hue's official symbol since the 17th century. By 3:30pm the return journey begins, and you reach your hotel around 6:30pm. Your driver speaks English throughout and provides bottled water. The full loop runs about 11 hours door-to-door, though active time at the sites is closer to five.
