Lunch at a local restaurant comes at 12:15 PM. From 1:00 PM onward, you explore Hue's Imperial City on foot: the Ngo Mon Gate, the Library, Thai Hoa Palace, and the Nine Dynastic Urns that sit at the heart of the Citadel. The Citadel itself is a fortress of 520 hectares built starting in 1805 on the north bank of the Perfume River, with ten main gates. The scale alone takes time to move through. After the Citadel, you visit Thien Mu Pagoda, built in 1601 and restored by multiple Nguyen kings. The pagoda was a center of Buddhist organizing and protest during the 20th century, so the space carries that history in its layout and the stories attached to it.
