The Experience

Your driver picks you up at your Hoi An hotel and heads south toward Hue. The first landmark is Hai Van Pass, a hillside road that climbs between the coast and the mountains—vestiges of an ancient fortified gateway sit at the top, and old American and French bunkers offer views across the landscape without a steep climb. The pass itself is the draw here; it's one of the most scenic roads in the country.

Before reaching Hue, you stop at Lang Co, a fishing township with a beach recognized in 2009 as one of the 30 most beautiful bays in the world, then at Lap An Lagoon, where locals live on the water surrounded by trees and clear water. These are brief pauses in the drive, not lengthy stops, so the day keeps moving toward the city.

In Hue itself, you visit Khai Dinh Tomb first—a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the last major construction of the Nguyen Dynasty, which ruled Vietnam from 1802 to 1945. Its architecture blends Vietnamese and French styles in ways unique to this tomb. Next is Thien Mu Pagoda, a 400-year-old structure and one of the most recognizable pagodas in Hue, where your driver or guide explains its long history. The final stop is the Imperial City citadel, the walled headquarters where the Nguyen kings lived and governed for 143 years. After the citadel, your driver returns you to your Hoi An hotel.
