The Experience

"You ready for the best coffee in Central Vietnam?" That’s what Tuan asked as we zipped out of Hoi An on his motorbike. I was still figuring out how to hold on without looking like I was clinging for dear life. The air smelled like wet grass and exhaust — not unpleasant, just real. We left the city behind fast, weaving past rice paddies where women in conical hats bent low over the fields. Tuan pointed out water buffaloes lounging in the mud. He told me their names (I forgot instantly) and laughed when I tried repeating them.

Our first stop was Thanh Toan Bridge. It’s this old wooden bridge in a tiny village, surrounded by rice paddies and narrow canals. There were no crowds — just a few locals chatting under the roof, one lady selling sticky rice wrapped in banana leaves. I bought some, mostly because it felt right, and it tasted faintly sweet and earthy. The morning was humid but not too hot; you could hear frogs somewhere nearby. Then we rode on toward Tam Giang Lagoon — honestly, I’d never heard of it before this day trip from Hoi An to Hue, but it’s huge and so calm you can see the sky doubled in the water. Fishing boats drifted quietly; one guy waved at us with both hands like he knew us.

Somewhere after that we stopped at Mo Springs — clear water running over smooth stones, cool enough to make my feet tingle when I dipped them in. Tuan said locals come here on weekends to swim or nap under the trees. We shared bottled water (he insisted on carrying everything), then headed up toward Hai Van Pass itself. That climb is something else: mist curling around the road, sudden gusts of mountain air that smell sharp and green. At the top we pulled over for coffee at a roadside shack with plastic chairs and a view that made me forget about my phone for once.

The rest is a blur of wind and color — Lang Co Beach’s pale sand flashing by, Marble Mountains looming off to one side, Dragon Bridge twisting over Da Nang’s river if you start or end there. Tuan kept pointing things out: shrines tucked into hillsides, fishermen hauling nets by hand. He told stories about growing up nearby; sometimes he’d stop talking just to let me listen to the engine or watch clouds move across the sea below us. I still think about that view sometimes when it rains back home.
