The experience
Five to six hours sounds long until you realize you're not sitting in a bus with forty other people. You're in a private car with a driver who speaks English and actually stops when something worth stopping for appears. The route from Hue to Hoi An covers 130 kilometers, and the thing that makes it different from taking a train or bus is that you get to feel the landscape change instead of just watching it blur past a window. Lap An Lagoon comes first, a brackish water lake spreading across 800 hectares with mountains rising behind it, the kind of view that makes you understand why people stay in this region longer than they planned.
After the lagoon, the road climbs toward Hai Van Pass: one of the highest passes in Vietnam and genuinely the reason you want a car instead of public transport. The pass winds around the mountainside above the central coast, and from the top you can see Lang Co Bay below and Da Nang City in the distance, the whole landscape laid out like someone drew it on purpose.
