The experience
The tour starts with pickup from your Hoi An hotel and heads south to Marble Mountains, a cluster of five limestone and marble peaks symbolizing the five elements. From there, the route climbs Hai Van Pass, Vietnam's highest mountain pass at 500 meters elevation, where clear days open views across Da Nang city, Son Tra Peninsula, Lang Co beach and Chan May Port. You'll spend roughly an hour at the pass and stop at Lang Co beach at its base before continuing inland toward Hue.
Khai Dinh Tomb sits 10 kilometers from Hue city on Chau E mountain, reached by climbing 127 dragon-bannistered steps. The tomb blends European and Asian architecture (steel and reinforced concrete rather than traditional materials) with courtyards holding statues of mandarins, horses and soldiers. Hue Citadel, the final stop, is a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site built between 1803 and 1833. The complex holds three sections: the Citadel itself with nearly 140 structures, the Imperial City with over 100 royal buildings and shrines, and the Purple Forbidden City reserved for the king and royal family.
Your driver is professional and the car is modern. Fuel, tolls and parking are covered. Bring cash or card for entrance fees at each site, which are not included. The route works for any fitness level, though Khai Dinh Tomb requires climbing and Marble Mountains involves some walking. Meals are on your own. Plan lunch stops along the way or eat in Hue before heading back to Hoi An.

Top questions
What is Marble Mountains and why is it the first stop?
Marble Mountains, called Ngu Hanh Son in Vietnamese, is a group of five limestone and marble peaks located 8 kilometers southeast of Da Nang. Each peak represents one of the five elements (metal, wood, water, fire and earth), and the site is a natural landmark worth seeing before the drive inland to Hue.
How high is Hai Van Pass and what can you see from the top?
Hai Van Pass sits 500 meters above sea level, making it Vietnam's highest mountain pass. On clear days, the top offers views of Da Nang city, Son Tra Peninsula, Lang Co beach and Chan May Port. You'll spend about an hour there and can stop at Lang Co beach at the pass's base.
What makes Khai Dinh Tomb different from other royal tombs in Hue?
Khai Dinh Tomb was built with modern materials like steel and reinforced concrete under Western influence, unlike traditional tombs. The architecture mixes European and Asian styles, with a courtyard holding statues of mandarins, horses and soldiers, and you reach it by climbing 127 steps bordered by dragon banisters.
How many sections does Hue Citadel have and what is each one for?
Hue Citadel has three sections: the Citadel itself, built 1805–1832 for defense with nearly 140 structures; the Imperial City, built 1804–1833 for royal worship and ceremonies with over 100 buildings; and the Purple Forbidden City, built in 1803 for the king and royal family.
Can I choose what size car I travel in?
Yes. You can book a private sedan, van or SUV depending on your group size and luggage needs. Your choice is made at checkout and the driver picks you up from your Hoi An hotel.
