The Experience
The morning air in Da Nang felt cool as our guide pulled up right outside my hotel—no need to stress about transport. After a quick hello, we set off toward My Son Sanctuary, winding past rice paddies and the odd roadside coffee stand. By the time we reached the sanctuary, the sun was already warming up, and you could smell damp earth mixed with incense drifting from nearby altars.
Walking into My Son, I noticed how the moss clung to the ancient brick towers—some crumbling, some surprisingly intact. Our guide, Ms. Lan, shared stories about the Cham people and pointed out carvings I’d have missed on my own. The Apsara dance performance was a real highlight—barefoot dancers moving to music that echoed off the old stones. Before heading out, we stopped at Tra Kieu Marian Pilgrimage Center; it’s quiet there except for birds and distant temple bells.
After lunch in Hoi An (I still remember the taste of fresh herbs in my cao lầu noodles), we wandered through narrow lanes lined with lanterns and yellow-washed houses. The Japanese Covered Bridge looked even older up close—there’s a faint scent of river water underneath it if you pause for a second. We popped into Fukien Assembly Hall and checked out some local crafts at a small workshop tucked behind a tailor shop. There was just enough time to browse for souvenirs before heading back to Da Nang as dusk crept in.
