The experience

The journey starts with a sleeper bus from Hanoi that gets you to Ha Giang City by morning. After breakfast, you head north on the "Happiness Road" toward Quan Ba, stopping at Heaven's Gate to see the Fairy Hills rising from the valley floor. Lunch comes around Tam Son, then the road climbs into Du Gia village, a quiet place ringed by rice fields and waterfalls where you stay overnight with a local ethnic minority family.

Day two takes you deeper into the mountains. You ride through Meo Vac and then tackle Ma Pi Leng Pass: the legendary stretch that cuts through deep canyons with a river winding far below. The pass is the centerpiece of the Ha Giang Loop, and the road itself is the reason people come. You end the day in Dong Van, the northernmost town in Vietnam, where you can explore the Old Quarter or hike to the French Fortress for sunset.

The third day depends on timing: if it's Sunday, you start at Dong Van Market, where ethnic minorities from across the region gather to trade. Then you head to Lung Cu, Vietnam's northernmost point, and climb the Lung Cu Flag Tower to see the China border. Sa Phin comes next, with a visit to the H'mong King's Palace, followed by a ride through Yen Minh pine forest to Nam Dam village, home to the Dao ethnic group. Day four is a slower morning walk in Nam Dam before you explore Lung Khuy Cave, one of Ha Giang's natural treasures. Lunch in Tam Son, then a scenic backroad through limestone peaks and rice terraces brings you back to Ha Giang City by afternoon. The sleeper bus carries you back to Hanoi that evening.
