The overnight bus from Hanoi arrives in Ha Giang around 3 a.m., and you'll have the morning to rest and eat before your guide shows up at 9 a.m. to walk through the route on a map and sort out the logistics. By midday you're on the bike heading toward Bac Sum Pass, about 20 kilometers out, where the road starts climbing in 20 tight switchbacks—locals call it the snake road.
