The overnight bus from Hanoi arrives in Ha Giang around 3 a.m., and you'll have the morning to rest and eat before your guide shows up at 9 a.m. to walk through the route on a map and sort out the logistics. By midday you're on the bike heading toward Bac Sum Pass, about 20 kilometers out, where the road starts climbing in 20 tight switchbacks: locals call it the snake road. Day three is the centerpiece. Ma Pi Leng Pass climbs to 2,000 meters and the road carves into the cliff face. It's called the king of passes in northern Vietnam, and the name sticks once you're on it. The Nho Que River Canyon opens below, and there's a boat trip to see it from the water level, which changes how the whole landscape reads. You stop for lunch in Meo Vac, then push into the trail roads toward Du Gia village, where seven ethnic minority groups live side by side.
