The afternoon starts at 2pm when your driver picks you up from your hotel in Hoi An or Da Nang. By 2:30 you're at Marble Mountain—five limestone hills that locals call Ngu Hanh Son, each one riddled with caves, tunnels and small Buddhist temples tucked into the rock. The caves are the real draw here. You walk through narrow passages where light filters in from openings above, and the air shifts from humid to cool as you go deeper. Your guide points out the shrines and explains which caves connect to which, and you spend about 90 minutes just moving through them, climbing stone steps worn smooth by decades of feet.

After Marble Mountain, there's a 40-minute drive to Am Phu Cave—the one locals call the hell cave because of how the rock formations look. It's smaller and more focused than Marble Mountain, and the guide walks you through the Buddhist philosophy behind it: the idea of karma, cause and effect, how your actions shape what comes next. It's not heavy-handed, just woven into what you're seeing. By the time you leave, you've been moving for a few hours, and the air-conditioned vehicle feels good.

The last stop is Monkey Mountain, which is really Son Tra Mountain, and you climb up to Linh Ung Pagoda—one of the biggest in Da Nang. The main draw is the view: you're high enough to see the whole city and the coast spreading out below, and there's a massive white Lady Buddha statue that's the tallest in Vietnam. It's a different kind of stop from the caves—less about crawling through rock and more about standing still and taking in the scale of the place.
