The Experience

We almost missed our hotel pickup because I couldn’t find my other shoe — classic me. Our guide, Hien, just grinned and said we’d be grateful for the early start once we saw Ba Na Hills before the tour buses rolled in. He was right. The cable car up was so quiet, just the hum of the machinery and this weirdly sweet smell from the forest below (jasmine? something else?). It felt like floating above a green sea. When we stepped onto the Golden Hand Bridge, there were maybe five other people. My partner tried to take a selfie and nearly dropped her phone over the edge — Hien laughed and offered to take one for us instead.

The French Village up there is kind of surreal — misty stone buildings, little gardens with roses still wet from last night’s rain. We poked around an old wine cellar that smelled like damp earth and something sharp I couldn’t name. There’s a theme park too (Fantasy Park), but we mostly just wandered, watching clouds drift past the mountaintops. Lunch was in Da Nang at this tiny spot Hien knew — he ordered for us because I butchered every Vietnamese word on the menu. The noodles had this smoky taste; I still think about them sometimes when I’m hungry late at night.

After that, we stopped at Dragon Bridge — it really does look like a dragon sliding across the river, all gold scales and traffic noise. Then Marble Mountains: cool air inside the caves, incense hanging heavy near small shrines tucked into rock crevices. At Non Nuoc village below, we watched artisans chisel marble statues by hand; their hands moved so fast but with such care, you know? On the drive back to our hotel, I realized how much quieter my mind felt than when we’d started out that morning.
