The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the way the light shifted—one minute we were weaving through Saigon traffic, the next we’d slipped into this hush of green. Our guide, Minh, handed out cold water in the van (I think he could tell we were melting already) and pointed out where the city just… stopped. The air changed too—salty, thick with that muddy river smell. It’s only about 40 km from Ho Chi Minh City to Can Gio Mangrove Biosphere Reserve, but it felt like another world before we even got on the canoe.

The boat ride was quiet except for that—just water lapping and someone’s phone camera clicking now and then.

We stopped at this bat sanctuary deep in the forest, where everything felt a little damp and echoey. Not gonna lie, I didn’t expect bats to be so… peaceful? Climbing Tang Bồng Tower after lunch nearly did me in (26 meters feels higher when you’re full), but seeing all that green stretching out below—the tangled trees, shining water channels—it made me want to just stand there forever. The ride back was sleepy; everyone dozed except Minh who told stories about growing up near Can Gio.
