The Experience

Six hours covers eight distinct stops, starting with Registan Square — the three tilework-covered madrasahs that define not just Samarkand but the entire Central Asian skyline. From there the route moves to Gur Emir Mausoleum, where gilded interior decoration surrounds the tomb of Tamerlane, then to Bibi-Khanym Mosque, the largest in Central Asia, built by Tamerlane's wife to commemorate his victory over India. A stop at Siyab Bazaar lets you walk through spice stalls and fruit vendors before the tour continues to smaller, less-crowded sites.

The second half of the day reaches Shah-i-Zinda Necropolis — roughly twenty mausoleums housing Tamerlane's female relatives and, uniquely in Central Asia, a descendant of the Prophet. Hazrat Khizr Mosque, the first mosque built in Samarkand, comes next. Afrasiyab Museum preserves seventh-century frescoes from before the Arab period, a collection found nowhere else in Uzbekistan. The tour ends at the Silk Paper Factory in Konigil, where you watch paper being made from mulberry bark using centuries-old techniques, and see the production of sesame, cotton, linseed and melon seed oils.

A professional guide in your chosen language (English, Spanish, Italian, French, German or Russian) handles the narrative at each stop. The vehicle is air-conditioned, and all monument entrance fees are covered — no separate payments at the gate. Pickup is included, though the itinerary does not specify the hotel collection point or exact start time; confirm those details when you book.

Is this one for you?The tour moves at a steady pace across eight sites in six hours, which means walking between stops and standing for explanations at each one — suited to travelers comfortable with a full day of sightseeing rather than a leisurely pace. If you prefer to linger at one or two places instead of seeing everything, a private guide or a shorter itinerary would work better.

Top questions

What is the Registan and why does the tour start there?

Registan Square is the centerpiece of Samarkand — three massive madrasahs (Islamic schools) covered in tilework and calligraphy, built between the 15th and 17th centuries. The tour opens there because it is the most recognizable landmark in the city and sets the scale of what Tamerlane's empire built.

Does the tour include lunch?

Lunch is not included in the tour price. The stop at Siyab Bazaar gives you time to buy food — bread, dried fruit, spices — but a sit-down meal is not part of the itinerary.

What makes Shah-i-Zinda different from the other mausoleums on the tour?

Shah-i-Zinda is a necropolis of about twenty connected mausoleums, mostly housing female relatives of Tamerlane. It is the only place in Central Asia where a blood relative of the Prophet was buried, making it a site of particular religious significance beyond its architecture.

What is the Afrasiyab Museum and what will I see there?

Afrasiyab Museum holds the only collection of pre-Arabic frescoes from Central Asia (seventh century) preserved in Uzbekistan. These paintings predate the Islamic period and offer a rare glimpse of the region's earlier artistic traditions.

Can I see how traditional Samarkand paper is made?

Yes. The Silk Paper Factory in Konigil is the final stop, where you watch mulberry bark being processed into paper using ancient methods. The factory also demonstrates the production of sesame, cotton, linseed and melon seed oils, all made in the same traditional way.
