The experience
The route itself is the opening act. Leaving Samarkand, you climb into the Zarafshan Range on a road that shifts from rocky cliffs to rolling hills, with patches of greenery and sometimes wildflowers in spring and early summer. The Takhta-Karacha Pass sits at the high point, offering panoramic views across rugged terrain and valleys. On a clear day the vistas stretch far enough to photograph. As you descend toward Shakhrisabz, small villages appear along the route: a glimpse of how people live in this part of Uzbekistan.
Ak-Saray Palace is what draws most visitors. Built by Amir Temur, the complex once announced itself through two towers 50 meters high, each framing an arch that spanned 22 meters. The 16th century brought destruction when Abdullah Khan, the ruler of Bukhara, ordered the buildings torn down. What remains are the foundations and fragments that let you read the scale of what stood there. The Kok-Gumbaz Mosque, completed by Ulugbek in 1434 to honor his father Shah Rukh, sits nearby and has been heavily renovated. Both sites carry separate entrance fees.
The full day runs seven hours from pickup to return. If you choose the guided option, your English-speaking guide handles the route and the history at each stop. Without a guide, you move at your own pace through the same sites. Either way, the vehicle is air-conditioned and water is provided. The drive back to Samarkand follows the same mountain pass in reverse.
