The experience
How do you reach Shakhrisabz without renting a car? The tour handles the 90-kilometer drive south from Samarkand, climbing through the Zarafshan Range toward the Takhtakaracha Pass. The road follows a major Silk Road branch where Alexander and Amir Temur once marched their armies toward India. At the pass, which sits above 1620 meters, you stop to photograph the unusual rock formations and, on clear days, the panorama of Kitob town in Kashkadarya province below. The entire journey takes seven hours including the drive back and lunch time.
Shakhrisabz itself centers on Amir Temur's architectural legacy. Ak Saray Palace, built between 1380 and 1404, was Temur's greatest palace, constructed by craftsmen he gathered from across his empire. Its vast mosaics patterned in blue, green and gold once rivaled Samarkand's Bibi Khanum Mosque in scale. The nine-meter bronze statue of Amir Temur, cast after Uzbekistan's independence in 1991 and weighing 20 tons, stands in his hometown alongside versions in Samarkand and Tashkent. The Dor-us Siyadat complex, built in the fourteenth century, arose from tragedy: Temur built it after his eldest son Jahangir was killed in 1375 at age 22, and later added his own crypt when a second son died in 1394.
The tour also includes Dor-ut Tilavat, the "place of praying," which holds the Kok Gumbaz Mosque built in 1435 by Temur's grandson Mirzo Ulugbek, and the mausoleum Temur constructed in 1373–1374 for Sheikh Shamseddin Kulyal, his father's spiritual advisor. Your guide is a local English speaker who knows the history and context of each site. Entrance tickets to all monuments are included, as is the air-conditioned vehicle for the full day.
