The experience

You'll depart Samarkand early and spend roughly an hour at the border crossing before meeting your driver and guide on the Tajik side. The drive into the Zerafshan Valley takes you through the landscape where Sogdian merchants once traded along the Great Silk Road, until the Arab invasions of the 7th and 8th centuries ended the city's dominance. Penjikent itself sits on the Zeravshan River with a modern population of 33,000, but the archaeological draw is what lies on the outskirts: the excavated remains of the ancient town, which reveal how a sophisticated Bronze Age settlement was organized.

Ancient Sarazm is the centerpiece: a site so significant that UNESCO added it to the World Heritage list in 2010. The excavation began in the 1970s when a local farmer found a bronze axe in his field and later recognized it in a museum display, alerting archaeologists to what lay beneath. What emerged was one of Central Asia's first well-developed Bronze Age settlements, now dated to around 5500 years ago. You'll walk the site with your guide, who can explain the layout and artifacts that show how people lived and worked in that era. The ruins of Panjakent itself, the later Sogdian city, sit nearby, and you'll have time to explore both before heading to the local market, where daily commerce still moves through the same streets that once connected the Silk Road.

The Rudaki museum rounds out the afternoon, honoring the poet born in a nearby village who became the founder of Tajik-Persian classical literature in the 9th and 10th centuries. After the museum, you'll drive back to the border, cross into Uzbekistan, and return to Samarkand by late afternoon. The guide speaks English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and several other languages, so you can book in whichever works for you. Pickup from your Samarkand hotel is included.
