Half-day Shahrisabz tour: Ak Saray Palace and mountain villages
A half day reaches three centuries of architecture in one rural mountain valley.
A half-day private tour of Shahrisabz takes you through vineyards and farmland to three major historical sites: the 50-meter gate towers of Ak Saray Palace, the blue-domed Kok-Gumbaz mosque built in 1435, and the Dorut-Tilavat madrasah with its intricate arches. Air-conditioned transport and an English-speaking driver are included. You choose between a private tour with a local guide or with the driver alone. The tour duration includes travel time, and the rest of your day remains free.

The experience
The route out of Shahrisabz passes vineyards and farms before climbing into the hills and mountains, a landscape most tourists never see. You'll stop at Ak Saray Palace first. What remains of it shows the scale: the two gate towers stood 50 meters high with an arch spanning 22 meters across, built by Amir Timur before the 16th-century destruction ordered by Abdullah Khan of Bukhara. The Kok-Gumbaz mosque sits opposite, its blue dome completed in 1435 by Ulugbek on behalf of his father Shah Rukh, and it served as the Friday Cathedral Mosque of the city.
The Dorut-Tilavat madrasah rounds out the ensemble, centered on a domed mausoleum over the tomb of Sheikh Kul. The gigantic blue dome and intricate arches make for strong photographs, and the site sits in a newly built park with greenery and flowers. You'll encounter local people here, often wedding parties, and can stop for ice cream at one of the traditional chayhanas with carved wooden columns. Bottled water is provided throughout the journey.
You can customize the itinerary to suit your interests, and the private air-conditioned car means you set the pace. If you book the private tour with a local guide, they'll provide deeper context on each site. If you choose the driver-only option, communication happens in English, Russian or Turkish. Either way, the half-day commitment leaves your afternoon and evening open.
