The experience
The day starts with pickup from your Samarkand hotel and a drive to the Uzbek-Tajik border, where you meet your Tajik guide and driver on the other side. From there, the jeep climbs into the Fann Mountains on unpaved mountain roads, stopping at each of the seven lakes in sequence. Nezhigon, the lowest at 1,640 metres, opens the chain with water that shifts between turquoise, blue and purple depending on light and season. Soya Lake sits in shadow between high cliffs and changes color with the weather. Gushor, just 400 metres away, is surrounded by steep rock and connected to Soya by a turbulent stream.
The fourth lake, Nofin, stretches more than 2.5 kilometres long but only 200 metres wide, the longest of the seven, and lunch happens here. Khurdak, the smallest, lies 1.5 kilometres further on near the village of Padrut. Marguzor is the largest and, to many visitors, the most striking: a wide expanse of blue water backed by mountains, with petroglyphs of ancient peoples carved into its shore and a small village scattered across the slopes above. Hazorchashma, the seventh and highest lake at around 2,400 metres, marks the end of the road in the Shing River gorge. Its name means "thousand springs" because it is fed by two rivers and countless streams.
The return journey retraces the mountain roads back to the border, where you cross back into Uzbekistan with your Uzbek driver and return to Samarkand. The full day runs 10 to 12 hours depending on road conditions and border timing. Because the roads are not asphalted and the terrain is remote, visits to all seven lakes can be shortened to ensure you return on schedule. No refunds are offered if this happens. The tour suits travelers with at least moderate fitness who are comfortable on rough mountain roads and prepared for a long day in a jeep.

What are the Seven Lakes of Tajikistan and why do they have those names?
The seven lakes sit in the Fann Mountains and each has a Tajik name tied to its appearance or character. Nezhigon means "eyelashes" and shifts color with the light. Soya means "shadow" because it sits between cliffs in shade most of the day. Gushor means "watchful" and was once home to poisonous snakes. Nofin means "umbilical cord" because it is the central lake and very long. Khurdak means "baby" and is the smallest. Marguzor is the largest and most beautiful, with ancient petroglyphs on its shore. Do I need a visa to cross the border from Uzbekistan into Tajikistan on this tour?
