The experience

The Madison River cuts through shadow at first light, and that's where the day starts: driving the early morning wildlife corridor from West Yellowstone before the park fills up. The guide knows where elk bed down and where bears move through the sagebrush. The route keeps moving. Continental Divide, where water splits toward the Gulf and Pacific. West Thumb Geyser Basin on Yellowstone Lake with its boardwalk trail past Fishing Cone and Black Pool. Mud Volcano near Hayden Valley, where you hear the super volcano breathe: mud churning, steam billowing out of Dragon's Mouth. And then the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, where the Lower Falls drop 308 feet and the canyon walls open in colors that shift with the light. Artist Point is the final stop, and it's the view most people remember.
