The Experience

I’ll be honest — I wasn’t sure what to expect on this Yellowstone Lower Loop tour from West Yellowstone. Maybe a few bison off in the distance, some steam here and there. But right after our guide, Mark, handed out warm muffins (blueberry, if you’re curious), we were already pulling over for a herd of bison just ambling across the road. The air smelled like sagebrush and something faintly sulfurous — not bad, just... different. Mark joked it was “Eau de Yellowstone.”

The first time Old Faithful erupted, everyone went quiet except for a kid who yelled “whoa!” at exactly the right moment. It’s funny how something you’ve seen a thousand times in photos feels totally new when you’re actually standing there with the spray hitting your face. Our group spread out along the boardwalks; I got lost staring at those crazy blue pools near the Fountain Paint Pot.
