Wine country roads, pinot noir pours and laughter in the valley

You’ll ride out from Portland into Oregon’s Willamette Valley with a small group and local guide, stopping at three handpicked wineries for tastings and stories straight from winemakers. Expect rolling hills, honest conversations, and time to actually savor each glass—not just rush through them. It’s less about checking boxes and more about soaking in what makes this valley special.

The Experience

We were already halfway to the Willamette Valley before I realized how much the landscape had changed—Portland’s edges just sort of faded into these gentle green hills. Our guide, Jen, kept pointing out little things I’d have missed: old fruit orchards tucked behind new vines, a hawk circling above a field. The van was quiet except for someone unwrapping a granola bar (I should’ve packed one too). There was this earthy smell when we stepped out at the first stop—Colene Clemens maybe?—like wet grass and oak barrels. I tried to swirl my glass like Jen showed us but nearly spilled it on my shoes. No one seemed to mind.

The second winery had a view that made everyone pause mid-conversation. You could see all the way across the valley to where the clouds hung over the Cascades. The owner came out for a minute, told us about his family planting those vines back in the ‘80s—he laughed when someone asked if he still liked wine after all these years. “Depends on the day,” he said. Tasting their Pinot Noir felt almost too easy; it was softer than I expected, kind of silky? Hard to explain unless you’re there.

By the third stop (Domaine Serene, I think?), people started chatting more—maybe it was the Chardonnay talking or just that everyone felt comfortable by then. Someone tried to pronounce “Willamette” right (“It’s will-AM-it, dammit!” our guide joked), and we all cracked up. The sun came out for a bit and warmed up the patio just enough that nobody wanted to leave. I kept thinking about how different this day trip from Portland felt compared to other wine tours—less hurried, more like being let in on something local.
