The experience

The drive from downtown Portland to the Willamette Valley follows the Vineyard and Valley Scenic Route, passing orchards and farms. Your guide shares the history of Oregon wine production and explains how the valley's soil and climate created one of the world's premier Pinot Noir regions, often compared to France's Burgundy. The valley itself is home to more than 500 wineries, and you'll stop at three of them, each chosen for what it shows about the region's winemaking.

At each winery, you'll taste flights and sit in on viticulture talks that walk you through how the grapes are grown and what ends up in the glass. Most wineries offer shipping to your home, and all have deals to purchase your favorite bottles in place of paying tasting fees at the door. The guide handles the route and the timing. You handle the tasting.

You'll ride in a high-roofed passenger van with air conditioning and bottled water. The tour ends back at Director Park in downtown Portland, where you started. Groups stay under eight people, which means the van doesn't feel crowded and the guide can move at a pace that lets you ask questions.
