The Experience

I almost lost my nerve when the first turtle popped up right next to me — I mean, nobody tells you how big they are until you’re actually floating there, mask fogging up, trying not to squeal through your snorkel. We’d left Waikiki early (the van picked us up right outside the hotel, which saved us from figuring out buses at 7am), and by the time we stepped onto the catamaran, the sun was already warming everything up. Our guide, Kimo, handed me fins and grinned, “Don’t worry, they’re just curious.” I wasn’t sure if he meant the turtles or us.

The water off Oahu is this wild blue-green — not fake postcard stuff but real and a little chilly when you first jump in. There was this moment when I lifted my head and heard nothing but gentle splashing and Kimo laughing somewhere behind me as he tried to teach someone how to use a sea scooter (I didn’t even know those existed). The salt stung my lips a bit. Someone nearby spotted dolphins way out past the boat — just quick flashes of silver. I tried paddle boarding for about five minutes before sitting down cross-legged because my legs wouldn’t stop shaking. No one judged; half the group was doing their own thing anyway.

Between swims, we huddled on deck with hot coffee and these weirdly comforting Cup Noodles — steam rising against the breeze. There were muffins too, but honestly I was more interested in watching Honolulu drift by in the distance while my towel threatened to blow away. A couple of kids ran around chasing each other; their dad kept pointing out Diamond Head in the background like it was some kind of magic trick. I still think about that view sometimes.
