Snorkel Oahu's Reefs & Swim with Green Sea Turtles

You board a daily charter off Waikiki, snorkel two reef sites on Oahu's south shore, and encounter green sea turtles, endemic Hawaiian fish, and seasonal marine life. Gear, wetsuits, and snacks are included. Non-swimmers can stay aboard and watch from the boat. Plan for a half-day out on the water with moderate swimming ability required if you're entering the water.

Step-by-step itinerary

Snorkel and explore Oahu reefs

  • Board Dive Oahu’s boat
  • Receive snorkel gear and wetsuit
  • Snorkel at south shore reefs
  • Observe turtles and reef fish
  • Explore second reef site
  • Watch for dolphins and whales
  • Non-swimmers enjoy Waikiki view

The Experience

The boat leaves the dock in Waikiki and heads straight for the south shore reefs where the water turns from murky to that shade of blue you only see in photos. You're in the water within the first hour, snorkel already fitted, and the reef drops away beneath you — brain coral the size of cars, schools of fish that dart and hold their ground at the same time. Your guide points out the endemic species, the ones that live nowhere else on earth, and yeah, there's a difference between seeing a fish in a tank and watching it hunt in its actual home. More than 21% of what swims down there is found only in Hawaii, which sounds like a statistic until you're floating above it.

The Honu — green sea turtles — show up on their own schedule. Some days they're everywhere, some days you catch one or two coming up for air, their shells barnacled and ancient-looking. The boat moves to a second reef site after a surface interval, and that's when the rhythm of the day settles in: you're not rushing, you're not being herded, you're just in the water watching what happens. Pods of dolphins pass through in winter, and if you're there between January and March, humpback whales breach far enough out that you see the spray and the tail. The water stays cold enough that the wetsuits matter, and they're included — so is the premier snorkel gear, which means your mask doesn't fog and your fins actually fit.

If you're not a swimmer or you'd rather stay dry, you ride instead. The boat's comfortable, the Waikiki view doesn't change, and you're still out there watching the same reef, the same turtles, the same endemic fish that nobody else gets to see. Snacks and refreshments come free, and the guide's been doing this long enough to know where the sharks and eels hang out without making it sound like a warning. You need moderate fitness to get in and out of the boat, and you should be able to swim if you're going under, but the whole operation is built around the idea that not everyone wants the same thing from a reef.

What’s included

Your day includes hotel or dock pickup coordination (public transport is available nearby), guided snorkel at two reef sites on Oahu's south shore, premier snorkel gear and wetsuits, snacks and refreshments throughout, and the chance to encounter green sea turtles, endemic Hawaiian fish, and seasonal dolphins or whales. If you're not snorkeling, you ride the boat as an observer with the same inclusions minus the gear.

Is this one for you?A good fit if you want to see Oahu's reef life and green sea turtles without arranging your own boat or gear — everything is provided and the guide knows where to find the marine life. You'll need to be a moderate swimmer if you're entering the water, and the boat ride itself requires you to be able to climb aboard, but non-swimmers can join as riders.

Is snorkel gear really included?

Yes. Premier snorkel gear and wetsuits are provided at no extra cost. You don't need to bring your own.

When do I see the sea turtles?

Green sea turtles (Honu) are in the area year-round, but sightings depend on the day. Dolphins visit in winter, and humpback whales breach January through March.

How long is the tour?

The itinerary includes two reef sites with a surface interval between them. Plan for a half-day experience on the water.

What's included in the price?

Snorkel gear, wetsuits, guided tour, snacks, and refreshments are all included.
