The Experience
The first thing I noticed wasn’t the turtles or even the water—it was the smell of sunscreen and salt in the air when we hopped off that bright red trolley near Waikiki Beach. I’d never been on one before. Our driver, Kaleo, joked about “turtle traffic” out by Turtle Canyon, which made me laugh (and also kind of nervous—how many turtles are we talking?). The boat was bigger than I expected, double-decker with this faded blue paint that felt right for Hawaii somehow. A couple of kids kept peeking overboard hoping for dolphins (no luck for us that day), but nobody seemed disappointed. The sun hit my shoulders just enough to remind me where I was.
