Step-by-step itinerary

Sunset Jeep tour and scenic views

  • Begin tour at Rio Verde west bank
  • Explore Camp Creek Wash canyon walls
  • Learn geology from Cowboy and Cowgirl guides
  • Ascend Box Canyon to Great Western Trail Plateau
  • Watch Arizona sunset at plateau

The experience

You start from your hotel or meeting point in central Scottsdale or Paradise Valley and head out to the west bank of the Rio Verde, the "Green River", where the canyon walls of Camp Creek Wash rise around you. The route follows the Great Western Trail, a path that cuts through terrain shaped by water and time, and your guide reads that geology as you go, pointing out what the rock faces and washes reveal about how this landscape was built.

The tour climbs from the Box Canyon and reaches the Great Western Trail Plateau as the sun drops toward the horizon. This is the stop the whole route is timed around: you have time to settle and watch the light shift across the desert, the sky moving through colors you came to see. Each Jeep carries a cooler with bottled water and Gatorade, so you stay hydrated through the evening. The guides are Cowboy and Cowgirl interpreters who know the country and speak English, and they stay with the group the whole way.

The return to Scottsdale or Paradise Valley happens after dark, and you're back at your starting point within the three to four hour window. This is a shared tour, so you'll ride with other travelers in the Jeep.

What’s included

  • English-speaking Cowboy or Cowgirl guide leading the group.
  • pickup and drop-off within central Scottsdale and Paradise Valley.
  • bottled water and Gatorade in the Jeep cooler.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (under 13).

What exactly is the Great Western Trail, and what will I see along it?

The Great Western Trail is a renowned route through the Arizona desert that passes through the Rio Verde area and Camp Creek Wash. You'll travel along terrain that shows the region's geological history (canyon walls, washes, and plateaus), and your guide explains what the landscape reveals about how water and time shaped it.

Why does the tour stop at the Great Western Trail Plateau?

The plateau is positioned to catch the sunset at the right moment in the evening. The entire route is timed so you reach this spot as the light begins to change, giving you a window to watch the Arizona sky transform before the return to Scottsdale.

How long does the whole tour take, and when does it start?

The tour runs three to four hours from pickup in central Scottsdale or Paradise Valley. The exact start time is set when you book, timed so the plateau stop aligns with sunset.

Is pickup from my hotel included, or do I need to arrange my own way there?

Pickup and drop-off are included within central Scottsdale and Paradise Valley, so you don't need to arrange separate transport. Your guide will collect you from your hotel or a meeting point and return you there after the tour.

What should I bring, and what's provided on the Jeep?

Each Jeep carries a cooler stocked with bottled water and Gatorade for the journey. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and layers: desert temperatures drop after sunset. Gratuities for your guide are not included in the tour price.
