The experience
You'll snorkel two separate reef sites in John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, the protected marine sanctuary that holds some of the most diverse coral and fish populations on the Atlantic coast. The reefs here are shallow enough to reach from the surface but deep enough to hold schools of parrotfish, barracudas, angle fish, Bermuda chubs, southern stingrays and yellow-striped snappers. A live guide leads the group and points out what lives where. The boat stays small and personalized, built around your pace and interests rather than a fixed itinerary for forty people.
Equipment comes with you: snorkel, mask, fins and a short wetsuit if you need one. Bottled water, soda and snacks are onboard. You can use an underwater camera to shoot the reef, and the operator provides one with a memory card slot. Bring your own card or buy a 32GB for $7. The whole outing takes 3.5 hours from departure to return. Arrive 30 minutes before the boat leaves so the crew can fit you and brief the group on the sites and the marine life you'll encounter.
Swimming ability is required. You must be at least 5 years old to snorkel. The activity is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health, and moderate fitness helps. No alcohol before or during the trip, and the captain can cancel without refund if anyone arrives intoxicated.

Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What kind of fish and coral will I actually see at John Pennekamp?
John Pennekamp's reefs hold parrotfish, barracudas, angle fish, Bermuda chubs, southern stingrays, yellow-striped snappers and sergeant majors, along with the living coral structures they inhabit. The exact species you encounter depends on the specific reef site and the season, but the park is known for the diversity and health of both.
Do I need to know how to snorkel before I book, or will the guide teach me?
You must be able to swim to snorkel on this trip. The guide will brief you on the sites and point out marine life, but basic swimming ability is a requirement, not something the guide teaches during the outing.
How long is the boat ride from Key Largo to the reef?
The entire outing is 3.5 hours from departure to return, which includes travel to both reef sites, time in the water at each location, and the ride back. The exact split between boat time and snorkeling time depends on which reefs the guide chooses that day.
Can my young child snorkel with me on this trip?
Children must be at least 5 years old to snorkel and able to swim. Infants can come along but must sit on an adult's lap during the boat ride and cannot enter the water.
What's included in the price, and what costs extra?
The price includes snorkel equipment, wetsuit, guide, bottled water, soda and snacks. Underwater camera use is included. If you want to save photos, bring your own memory card or buy a 32GB card for $7.
