The experience
The Sundiver III leaves from Key Largo and takes you to one of the shallow coral reefs inside the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, also known as John Pennekamp Underwater State Park. The entire outing runs 2.5 hours, with over an hour spent actually in the water exploring the reef. Because the boat visits only one location per trip instead of rushing between multiple stops, you get real time to move around the coral and see what lives there. The crew has been running these trips since 1983 and knows which reefs hold the most to see.
Mask, fins and a safety vest come with your booking. You'll need to bring your own snorkel or buy one at check-in for $15. The operator does not include snorkels, and full-face masks are not allowed because of safety concerns with their design. The crew specializes in kids, families and people snorkeling for the first time, so if you're nervous about the water, they know how to help. One hard requirement: you must be able to swim to snorkel with Sundiver. If you can't swim but want to come along, you can stay on the boat for a rider's fee and watch from above.
Check in at least one hour before your departure time. The boat does not refund passengers who miss it, so arrive early. An English-speaking guide is on board, and the crew can accommodate infants (who sit on an adult's lap) and service animals.
