The Experience

"Just trust your feet," our instructor said, grinning as I stared at the ocean south of Santa Barbara. I could smell salt and sunscreen mixing in the air while I wriggled into my wetsuit (which is way harder than it looks, by the way). The sand was cool under my toes that morning, and there was this weird mix of nerves and excitement buzzing in my chest. Our guide—Jake—had this easy way of explaining things, like he’d seen every possible wipeout already. He pointed out a couple of gentle waves rolling in and said those were for us.

We started with a quick lesson on the beach, just a few miles from Santa Barbara itself. Jake talked about surf etiquette (I didn’t know there were so many rules) and safety stuff before we even touched the water. I appreciated that—made me feel less like an idiot when I finally paddled out. The board felt huge under my arms but somehow lighter than I expected. When we finally ran into the ocean, that first cold splash hit me right in the face—I laughed out loud and almost lost my grip on the board.

I got pushed into my first real wave after maybe twenty minutes of flailing around. For a second, everything went quiet except for the sound of water rushing past—then I wiped out spectacularly and came up sputtering but weirdly proud. Jake cheered from behind me; he actually sounded happy every time one of us stood up for half a second longer than before. There was this moment where I just sat on the board looking back at the shore, sun peeking through some clouds, feeling like maybe I could do this again tomorrow—or next week, or whenever.
