You'll choose either a 9:00 am or 1:00 pm start time at a sandy-bottom beach a few miles south of the city.

The experience

You drive 25–30 minutes south of Santa Barbara to meet your instructor at the surf van parked at the beach. After you're suited up in a wetsuit and grab a long board, the lesson starts on the sand with instruction on surf safety, etiquette and the mechanics of standing up. Then you walk into the ocean, and your instructor coaches you through the waves, pushing you into the right ones so you can feel what it takes to pop up and ride.

The lesson runs 90 minutes and stays private. Just you (or your group) and one instructor, no rotation with other students. Most lessons happen at beaches with gentle waves and sandy bottoms where first-timers can find their footing without fighting a steep shore break. Your instructor reads the conditions and your progress in real time, adjusting the pace and the wave selection to match what you're ready for.

You'll need to know how to swim before you book, though most people don't actually swim during the lesson. It's a safety requirement. Bring a towel and a change of clothes. The wetsuit and board stay with the lesson. Choose the 9:00 am slot if you want calmer morning conditions, or the 1:00 pm departure if an afternoon works better for your schedule.
