The experience

The GoCar itself is the tour. It's a three-wheeled vehicle controlled like a motorcycle (throttle, hand brakes, motorcycle-style handlebar), but it seats two and has a trunk for your things. Once you're oriented at the rental location, you set the pace entirely. The GPS knows where you are and talks as you drive, but the moment you park, it stops. Park anywhere you want for as long as you want, and when you start moving again, the narration picks up. This means you're not locked into a schedule. You decide how long to linger at Fort Point under the Golden Gate Bridge, or at Baker Beach for photos, or rolling down Lombard Street's eight hairpin turns.

The route threads through the neighborhoods where bus tours can't easily maneuver. You'll pass through Fisherman's Wharf with its crab shacks and bakeries, drive into the Presidio (a decommissioned military base that feels like another world despite being 15 minutes from the wharf), and roll past Crissy Field where locals exercise along the bay. The Palace of Fine Arts, the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition survivor, is on the route. Fort Point sits at the bridge's foot, where the structure rises 200 feet overhead. You can't drive onto the bridge span itself, but the vantage point is the photo spot most visitors seek. Lombard Street, the famous crookedest street, comes at the end of your two hours: a natural finale where the car's narration and your own steering make the descent memorable.

Can I drive the GoCar across the Golden Gate Bridge itself?

No, the GoCar tour navigates you to Fort Point at the bridge's foot, where it rises about 200 feet overhead and is an excellent photo spot. From the car park at the bridge vantage point, you can gain pedestrian access to the bridge span on foot if you want to walk it.

What happens if I want to stop and explore one of the neighborhoods for a while?

You set your own pace entirely. Park the GoCar anywhere (motorcycle or car parking) for as long as you want. The GPS narration stops when you park and resumes as soon as you start driving again, so you're never rushed through a stop.

How many people can ride in a GoCar?

The GoCar seats a maximum of two people. The price is per vehicle, not per person, and both passengers must safely fit into DOT-approved helmets. The combined weight limit for two passengers is 500 lbs, and the maximum height is 6'4".

Do I need a motorcycle license to drive the GoCar?

No, a motorcycle license is not required. The driver must be 21 years or older, have a valid driver's license in their physical possession (no photocopy), and provide a major credit card at check-in. International visitors do not need an international license.
