The experience

The tour starts with pickup from either Downtown or Fisherman's Wharf between 8:30 and 9:00 a.m., then travels by small van through multiple neighborhoods. Your guide points out Lombard Street (the crookedest street in the world), the Marina District with views of the Palace of Fine Arts, Chinatown's Dragon's Gate, Coit Tower with panoramic city views, North Beach's Italian restaurants and Peter and Paul Church, the Golden Gate Bridge, and photo stops at the Embarcadero and Nob Hill. The route covers the Presidio, a military base until 1992, and passes through neighborhoods with outstanding views throughout.

After the city portion, the driver brings you to Pier 33 at least 30 minutes before your Alcatraz ferry departure. Your official ticket is included (no waiting in line to buy one) along with an audio guide available in 12 languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Dutch, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Mandarin, and two others. Once on the island, you explore at your own pace: the Main Cellhouse, the Dining Hall, the Lighthouse, the Warden's House ruins, and the seabird colony. Ferries back to the city depart every 30 minutes, so you control how long you stay. After your return, the operator will pick you up from Pier 33 and bring you back to your hotel (or you can arrange your own return if the timing doesn't align).

Bottled water is provided during the van tour. The experience suits all fitness levels, and infants can ride in a pram or stroller. Service animals are allowed. The whole outing runs 8 to 10 hours from pickup to return.
