The Experience

First thing I noticed was how the light cut through the water at Rainbow River—like someone left the pool lights on under a forest. We’d just finished the morning manatee tour near Crystal River, so I was still a bit chilly, but our guide (I think his name was Mike?) cracked a joke about “Florida cold” being anything under 70. The gear fit fine—mask didn’t leak for once—and after a quick orientation we followed him through this sleepy little town to the river. The docks smelled faintly of sunscreen and wet wood. I kept fumbling with my snorkel strap; nobody seemed to mind.

The boat ride upriver felt slower than I expected, but in a good way—turtles slid off logs as we passed, and Mike pointed out an otter darting between reeds (I missed it, naturally). He told us bits about how Rainbow River stays so clear because of the springs underneath, which made sense once you saw it: 200 feet of visibility, easy. When I finally slipped into the water it was colder than I thought but not shocking.
