You check in at American Pro Diving Center, get fitted with a wetsuit, ride a boat upriver while learning the river's history from your captain, then drift with the group in the water to spot fish, turtles, otters and fossils. The experience

Three and a half hours starts with check-in at American Pro Diving Center in Crystal River, where you try on gear and get a brief orientation before heading to the river. The captain walks the group through a neighboring small town to the wooded dock, and loading the gear onto the boat is straightforward. The boat ride itself carries views: traveling upriver you may see several types of fish, turtles and even an occasional otter, and the captain shares the history of the Rainbow River as you go.

Once in the water, the boat drifts with you so riders on board can also watch what unfolds below. The visibility runs over 200 feet, which means you see fish and turtles up close, and fossils coming out of the different springs dotting the bottom. At the end of the drift is a small cavern where sunfish congregate in numbers. Back on board, a short cruise returns you to the docks to unload gear and swap stories.

The wetsuit is included, and a US Coast Guard certified captain leads the group in English, Spanish, French, German or one of three other languages. Snorkelers, scuba divers with open water certification or higher, and riders who want to stay on the boat all go on the same trip. Children from age one can come along: infants ride in a stroller or on an adult's lap, and all areas of the center and boat are wheelchair accessible. Arrive 30 minutes early in your swimsuit underneath your clothes to speed up check-in.
