The experience

Crystal River holds the largest concentration of manatees in the world, and about 600 of them migrate to the springs each winter. You board an enclosed heated boat with no more than five other passengers and a professional captain, then enter the water with a guide who stays alongside you to demonstrate how to approach and interact with the animals respectfully. The guide photographs you in the water at no extra cost, and all snorkeling equipment (mask, snorkel, and wetsuit in sizes from toddler to adult 4X) comes with the booking.

The three-hour outing includes a scenic boat ride along Crystal River Archaeological State Park, hot cocoa, and bottled water. Children as young as three are welcome with a paid ticket. Younger children can join on private trips. Kids under six must wear a life vest while the boat is moving, and anyone under three sits on an adult's lap. The captains and guides are licensed professionals who are drug tested, and the activity suits all fitness levels, though it's not recommended for people with poor cardiovascular health.
